The Renaioli Association: The History of the ArnoRiver Revived

The Cultural Association “I Renaioli” was born in Florence with the aim of rediscovering and promoting an ancient Florentine tradition tied to the Arno River and the humble but essential work of the renaioli. Starting from the Middle Ages, these workers extracted sand and gravel from the riverbed—materials that contributed to the construction and development of the city of Florence.

Today, thanks to the passion and dedication of the Association, the charm of this tradition has come back to life. Founded in 1995, the Association has recovered and restored historic boats, many of which survived the 1966 flood. Each boat represents a unique piece of history, an open window to the past.

The Renaioli’s activities go beyond restoring and preserving the boats. The Association collaborates with institutions and charitable organizations on various projects.

The tours on the Arno River, lasting approximately 45 minutes, allow visitors to discover Florence from an extraordinary perspective, immersing themselves in the stories and secrets of the river that gave life to the city. During the tour, guests can admire the architectural beauties of Florence from an unusual vantage point and learn fascinating facts about the work of the renaioli.

These century-old boats are now the heart of a cultural project that embraces not only history but also art and music. Theatrical and musical events organized aboard the boats have, in the past, created magical moments, helping to keep alive the memory of a trade that deeply shaped Florentine identity.

Join us to discover Florence as you’ve never seen it before and to support an initiative that combines tradition, culture, and innovation. The Arno awaits you: step aboard and feel the emotion of history.

Art on the Arno

The Cultural Association of the Renaioli has always been a reference point for the enhancement of Florence’s cultural heritage and historical traditions. Born with the goal of rediscovering and promoting the unique charm of the Arno, our Association is committed to celebrating art, history, and culture through authentic and engaging experiences.

For years, we have organized and supported cultural initiatives that tell the story of the city and its inseparable bond with the river, promoting events, exhibitions, and collaborations with artists, scholars, and local institutions. Our activities not only highlight the beauty of Florence but also offer citizens and visitors the opportunity to immerse themselves in a historically rich context.

We are open to collaborations with organizations, associations, and professionals who share our mission: to revive the ancient tradition of the renaioli, protagonists of an authentic and poetic Florence, and to enhance the Arno as a place of art and culture.
